About this site

Who is this site for?

This site has been set up by the NSW Attorney-General's Department Crime Prevention Division to provide information and resources about date rape to girls who may have been assaulted, their friends and family.

We've chosen to target mainly girls because statistics show that adult sexual assault is almost entirely committed by men, and usually against women. Women are the victims in 96 percent of reported rape cases (Moran 1993).

Recognising that rape does happen to guys too, we have included a section for guys who've been assaulted. see Guys as victims.

It's important to emphasise that a lot of guys aren't violent and are supportive of women. Check out how you can support your friends and find out more about community activities that are happening to prevent sexual assault.

Why was it set up?

Date rape has been identified as a major issue in Australia and overseas. Studies have shown that girls between age 15 and 19 are most at risk of being sexually assaulted but are also the least likely to report it (Russo 2000).

Many young women don't know that sex they have not agreed to is a crime. One in 7 teenage girls interviewed for the Young People and Domestic Violence Survey said a boyfriend had tried to force them to have sex (Darren 2000).

This site is the result of a project that started in 1998 in Dubbo, New South Wales. Its development was a joint initiative of Delroy High School - Dubbo, DOORWAYS, Western Region Police Service, Macquarie Area Health Service - Women's Health & Sexual Assault Service, and the Macquarie Regional Violence Prevention Specialist.
